The Hudson Valley provides the perfect habitat for a wide variety of butterflies due to its diverse landscapes, which range from forests and meadows to gardens and farmland. Whether they’re migrating through or making their home in the valley, these butterflies contribute to the region’s natural beauty and ecological diversity. But can you tell which cool-looking caterpillars transform themselves into which species of butterfly?

These eight species of butterflies are commonly (and joyfully) spotted soaring around the valley in spring and summer. These corresponding types of caterpillars are seen beforehand making their way along the ground, too. Discover which become which.
