Rail Biking — Rail Explorers

Phoenicia (Ulster County)

Why we love it

Welcome to the Hudson Valley’s newest — and oddest? — form of recreation. You’ll pedal a special, four-wheeled “bike” along 4 miles of track on the historic Delaware & Ulster Railroad, often paralleling beautiful Esopus Creek on the way from Phoenicia to Boiceville. After a short rest (for the bike to be turned around), you head back. The bikes are equipped with electric motors, so you’ll have no trouble negotiating the slightly more uphill return route through the gorgeous Catskills scenery. Bikes are available for two or four passengers, making this a fun outing for a couple or family.

More to explore

Less than 15 miles away, Woodstock retains its cool hippie vibe and offers an array of interesting shops and restaurants.
