People Who Make a Difference: Tokata Iron Eyes

When construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline was announced, young people from the Standing Rock Sioux tribe mobilized to defend their ancestral and sacred lands in North and South Dakota. A Standing Rock Youth Leader, Tokata Iron Eyes serves as a voice for change in the fight for indigenous rights and environmental protection.

Poster artist Gabrielle Johnson: “My interest in visuals, storytelling and illustration, begun during childhood, has developed into a longstanding passion for eye-catching art and bold design. I aim to infuse movement into my designs, grabbing the viewer’s attention with striking contrast and fluidity.”

Words of Inspiration

“In general, I would consider myself a representative of indigenous youth. I feel like our perspective needs to be included in conversations. For a really long time, we didn’t have any say.” —Tokata Iron Eyes
