The Scenic Hudson Land Trust Board Member

Fred, longtime Chair of Scenic Hudson Land Trust and Scenic Hudson Chair from 2004-2010, is an author whose books include Escape from Extinction, An Eco-Genetic Novel (Vector Books LLC, 2020) and Getting to Green, Saving Nature: A Bipartisan Solution (W.W. Norton, 2016). His first book, Christian Nation (W.W. Norton, 2013), is a work of speculative fiction that considers the possibility of demagogic populism in America. Fred studied public and international affairs at Princeton’s Woodrow Wilson School and moral philosophy at King’s College, Cambridge, before receiving his law degree at University of Virginia Law School. He spent his law career as a partner at Sullivan & Cromwell LLP before leaving at the end of 2014 to devote himself full-time to writing and teaching. Fred serves as Chair of the Foundation for Landscape Studies, Vice Chair of the national Land Trust Alliance and The Battery Conservancy, and director of the Hudson Highlands Land Trust and Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival. He also serves on the Advisory Board of The Hastings Center (bioethics), and the Dean’s Advisory Committee of The City University of New York School of Public Health. Fred lives in Manhattan (where he maintains a green roof farm, see www.batteryrooftopgarden.org) and Garrison.
